Seattle’s 92nd Annual Opening Day of Boating

The Seattle Yacht Club is hosting their annual parade this Saturday, May 5, 2012. The first Opening Day parade through the Montlake Cut occurred in 1920 after the Seattle Yacht Club moved to its new (and current) location in Portage Bay. Much like today, spectators gather on the banks of the cut to watch the boats in their dress flags proceed into Lake Washington. Following the parade the Queen City Yacht Club sponsored a regatta in the lake. This year’s event again will kick off with the Windermere Cup. The 2012 regatta includes more than 800 athletes from international crews and the University of Washington. At high noon, the Montlake Bridge will open, the horn will blow, and one of the world’s largest boat parades will commence.

Boats from all over the northwest participate in the parade. From Olympia and Tacoma to Victoria and Vancouver. It is truly an amazing collection of the maritime community.

If you have plans already to participate, send us a note ( troy@cruisingnw.com ), we hope to see you down here! If you want to just come down and see the collection of boats, bring a blanket and picnic gear, settle in on the banks of the Montlake Cut and enjoy!

See our “live” coverage …. Happy Opening Day!
